About Joe DeSena

JOE DE SENA is the founder and owner of the Spartan Race, as well as a living legend in endurance and adventure racing circles — he completed the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon, raced the 140.6 miles of Lake Placid Ironman, and finished a 100-mile trail run in Vermont, all within one week.

In 2014, De Sena authored Spartan Up!, the #2 New York Times Bestseller, that changed lives and revealed the secrets to developing the resourcefulness and mental determination needed to become a true Spartan.

In addition to this new book you may have notices there are more ways for you to STFU (Spartan the F UP)

The Ultra Beast

Every Spartan Race is a baptism. The Ultra Beast is an exorcism. You have conquered the Sprint, dominated the Super, and laughed in the face of the Beast. You are ready for the Ultra Beast. Get ready to face not one, but two laps of the Beast. You thought you prepared and trained enough, but the Ultra Beast will prove you wrong.

The Ultra Beast will cover 26+ miles, with a few twists thrown in to keep it interesting. There is no map or details for the course. Don’t bother asking because we will not tell you. As always, if you’re not sure if you’re ready, or you spend more than one hour per year at Bed, Bath and Beyond, please only register for the Beast. The Ultra Beast will be too much for you.

Please do NOT complete an Ultra Beast registration if you are not comfortable with these terms.

The Hurricane Heat

Beyond the mileage of the Spartan Race Trifecta stands the Hurricane Heat, or HH. As a team-based event designed to push racers to greater personal distances, you quickly learn the value and true meaning of having mutual objectives through teamwork. You also see the connection between teamwork and success and one drives the other on both a personal level and as a member of something greater than yourself.

The Hurricane Heat 12 Hour

The 12 Hour Hurricane Heat, or HH12HR, is Spartan’s next level standalone event specifically designed to test every facet of your mental, intellectual and physical abilities through the use of mental challenges, nonlinear problem solving, morality, as well as teamwork and individual performance under physical duress.

Where the HH emphasizes the Warrior’s Ethos and teamwork to finish and find success, the HH12HR seamlessly interweaves elements of individual competition against the clock and other participants within the challenges that require teamwork and synergy.

Developed to forge the next level of Spartan, and as the precursor to the Spartan Agoge, the HH12HR is difficult, challenging and rewarding. Participants are required to be self-supported for the duration of the event. No outside assistance, no support team, no crew. To accomplish this, it is recommend that each participant carry a large ruck/backpack, a 2-3L Hydration Unit, and whatever food you think you need to survive 12 hours of pushing yourself beyond your limits. In addition, participants will receive a gear list via email that will include mandatory gear and equipment. Due to the unique nature of every HH12HR event, the gear list will always contain a few items that are event specific. Participants are strongly encouraged to arrive equipped and prepared.

In this phase of your 1,000 mile journey are the lessons of actions/consequences, personal accountability, perseverance, and dedication. You’ve mastered initiative. Now it’s time to master follow through and commitment.

STFU and welcome to the HH12HR.

Finishers will receive a unique HH12HR T-shirt, as well as a one-of-a-kind HH12HR Finishers Patch to display proudly on your ruck or Tac-Hat.

What you will need for the HH12HR

You will need to be able to perform, self supported, for the duration of the event. We recommend a large ruck (military based backpack), a 2-3L Hydration Unit, and whatever food you’ll need to survive 12 hours of pushing yourself beyond your limits. Note: More required gear will be emailed to you in the week or two prior to the event.

Finishers will receive a unique HH12HR T-shirt, as well as a one-of-a-kind HH12HR Finishers Patch to display proudly on your ruck or Tac-Hat.

The Agoge

In the 7th century BC, the Spartans wanted to produce the strongest and most mentally tough citizens on earth. To do this, they created the Agoge, a system of training that became the envy of the known world.

Spartan Race brings this same philosophy to modern times with a fully immersive training program that balances class time with hands-on practical application of skills and lessons taught in the classroom. The Spartan Agoge will be held in Pittsfield, Vermont on the “farm” twice a year—once in summer and once in winter—with special sessions for US military units.

In the future, the Spartan will host the Agoge in historic locations across the globe.

To complete the Spartan Agoge, a person must overcome mental and physical obstacles that aim to develop the body, mind and spirit. Most people will need to undertake months of training and self-discovery to earn this coveted achievement.

It is advised that entrants have completed various endurance events and intellectual challenges. This could mean developing perseverance, camaraderie, and leadership through military training, or it could mean completing various Spartan Race and Spartan Hurricane Heat distances.

Learning during The Agoge training centers around:

  • Purpose: Having a clear intention or objective in life.
  • Commitment: Dedicating oneself to a fulfilling, healthy, and meaningful life through action.
  • Resiliency: Adapting to change and overcoming stress and adversity repeatedly.
  • Knowledge: Gaining information, facts and situational awareness through lived experiences.

The Spartan Agoge brings together every physical and mental strength as well as everything a person has learned in life. Finishers become innovative thinkers, prudent risk-takers, and expert decision-makers. They will embody the Spartan Code, a code of honor and respect that breeds trust and inspires action. Most importantly, they become masters of themselves.
